Bowler hat, cane and duck-footed walk: Charlie Chaplin’s tramp has watched over the Vevey quays since 1982, facing the lake and a few steps from the Fork planted in the water. The statue is the work of the British sculptor John Doubleday. Chaplin, who spent his last twenty-five years at the Manoir de Ban in Corsier-sur-Vevey, was not only a film-maker: he composed the music for his films, and the theme of “Limelight” — partly shot on the Riviera — became the worldwide hit “Smile”. He rests in the cemetery of Corsier-sur-Vevey, on the heights above.
