Ten minutes from Montreux, Vevey has its own musical history, more classical and more discreet than that of its neighbouring festival. The pianist Clara Haskil lived there from 1942 until her death, on the quays where a silhouette now recalls her; the Clara Haskil Competition, at the Théâtre Le Reflet, bears her name and rewards a way of playing rather than virtuosity. The Musée Jenisch sets its paintings in dialogue with Montreux Jazz music through the ART&SONS trail, and gives concerts in its exhibition rooms. At the Temple Saint-Martin, Rick Wakeman had the church organ wired up to Mountain Studios to record “Awaken”, the fifteen-minute piece that closes Yes’s “Going for the One”. On the heights, the cemetery of Corsier-sur-Vevey holds Charlie Chaplin’s grave, and his statue watches over the quays, a few steps from the Fork. And all year round, the Rocking Chair keeps contemporary music alive on the Avenue de Gilamont.
